Don’t Sleep: The Urgent Messages of Oliver Munday
Graphic Design in a Time of Resistance
by Oliver Munday, Introduction by Hilton Als
- Hardcover: 224 pages
- Publisher: Rizzoli (March 27 2018)
- Language: English
New York based graphic designer Oliver Munday has put together a comprehensive survey of his graphic designs- including covers for Time Magazine and illustrations for the New York Times. Divided in chapters with headings such as: Criminal Justice, Race, Democracy, Education etc., Munday’s work touches on many current social and political issues. Apart from a brief introduction by Hilton Als, and a short essay by Munday describing his educational and career path, each design is presented in full page format without explanation. A small reference to where each was originally published is included, but doesn’t distract from the work.
His work, often photo based and collaged, are bold and colourful and make an impact with the use of negative space around the image. This is a great book to leaf through both for inspiration, as a reminder of the topics of the day, and an example of the power of good graphic design to communicate an idea to the viewer.
