Anthony Mastromatteo is an artist whose oil on linen on board paintings show a deft technical mastery that could easily seduce one into a purely superficial enjoyment of his paintings. And how enjoyable it is, to witness an artist working in a trompe l’oeil style, rendering with finesse the torn-out comic book pages with all their age and patina, seemingly attached to the canvas itself with masking tape, also a precisely painted element.
To stop there with only an aesthetic appreciation would be to miss the intellect behind the work, for these are conceptually driven pieces, drawing on literary and philosophical references, sometimes hinted at through the title, but not easily parsed by the viewer. I suggest visiting Anthony Mastromatteo’s website and taking the time to read a selection of essays that the artist has penned about his work, which will add another layer of understanding and appreciation to his paintings.
