The engineering and architecture firm Stantec has recently published a wonderful hardcover book detailing an in-depth study of 10 of their airport projects. The book is richly designed with site plans, architectural studies, and colour photography of the finished airports. For anyone with an interest in infrastructure or transportation design, this book offers an inside look at projects that would be impossible as a passenger transiting through the spaces.
A consequence of having the firm involved in the design and construction of the airports create and publish this book is that the photographs are of the spaces when new, barely used and impeccably clean. They have a somewhat surreal feeling of a staged, artificial setting. The photographs remind me of state propaganda photos where everything is a little too perfect to be believable…
