This book, entirely without text or explanation, outlines a project of self-portraits by L.A. based artist Alex Israel. The project, originally developed for a video work “As it Lays”, touches on celebrity culture and the development of an icon or logo, brought to life through repetition, deliberate placement and celebrity endorsement. The book shows the development process of these large self-portrait heads, manufactured at Warner-Brothers studios and then installed anywhere from white-walled gallery spaces to streetscapes. The logo of the artists head, a pop-art style representation, repeated throughout the city like a product advertisement, the artists selling and distributing this image of himself to the masses.
